Best Time to Visit Sámara: Dry Season vs Green Season

  • Posted on

Costa Rica has two seasons, and the right one for your trip depends on what you want from it. We live in Sámara year-round, so here's the real comparison, not the brochure version.

Verano: December to April

The dry season. Day after day of sun, almost no rain, and the hottest stretch of the year by March and April. The hills around town fade from green to gold, the beach days are endless, and this is when most travelers come. That popularity has a price: peak rates, busier restaurants, and tours that book out 3 to 7 days ahead instead of same-day. Christmas through New Year and Semana Santa (the week before Easter) are the two crunch periods. If your dates touch either one, book the villa and the big activities early.

The green season: May to November

The rains come back in May and the landscape flips from gold to deep green within weeks. The rhythm most days: sunny morning, building clouds, an afternoon or evening downpour, then it clears. Mornings are the prize. You plan your beach time and tours before lunch and let the afternoon storm be your siesta soundtrack. July often brings a drier spell locals call veranillo, the little summer. September and October are the wettest months and the quietest, with the lowest rates and the most dramatic skies of the year.

What stays the same

Daytime temperatures hold around 30C (mid-80s F) all year. The ocean is warm in every month. The bay's gentle, sandy-bottom wave is beginner-friendly in both seasons. And sunset delivers regardless.

The wildcards

Humpback whales pass through on two migrations: roughly August to October and December to March. If whales are on your list, aim for those windows and confirm with the operator the week of your trip. Surfers chasing bigger swell tend to prefer the green season; beginners do fine year-round.

Our take

If you want guaranteed sun and don't mind company, December to April is the classic for a reason. But the green season is underrated. June, July, and November in particular hit a sweet spot: green hills, warm rain, fewer people, better prices, and mornings that look exactly like the postcard.

Whenever you come, Villas Dualis is a 10-minute walk from Sámara Beach with a private pool waiting after either kind of afternoon. Check availability and book direct, or write us at stay@villasdualis.com if you're weighing dates. We'll tell you what the season is actually doing.
