Sámara is a beach town, but a short drive inland and you're in green hills with rivers and swimming holes. Waterfall days are the green-season payoff: when the rains come, the falls run full and the hills go bright green. Here's the realistic version, including the safety part you actually need to read.
Belén Waterfall: the local self-guided trip
The closest waterfall worth a half-day is Belén, inland from Sámara. It's self-guided, so no operator and no ticket: you drive, park, walk in, and swim if the water's right. It's a Sámara local favorite rather than a polished tourist attraction, which is the charm and the catch (no facilities, so bring your own everything).
When the water's actually good
Waterfalls are all about flow, and flow follows the rain:
- Start of dry season (around Dec to Jan): still plenty of water from the recent rains, often the ideal balance of flow and clear access.
- Deep dry season (Mar to Apr): water can run low. Still a nice outing, just not the dramatic version.
- Green season (May to Oct): the falls come back to life and run full. The best flow of the year, with the one big caveat below.
The safety part (read this)
- Never get in during or right after heavy rain. Flash floods come fast and are the real danger at any waterfall, anywhere. If it's been pouring upstream, skip it that day, even if it's sunny where you are.
- Wear shoes with grip. Wet rock is brutally slippery. This is exactly what that one pair of grippy shoes in your packing list is for.
- Bring water, snacks, and a dry bag. No facilities means no shop, no bathroom, no lifeguard.
- Bring repellent. Mosquitoes hang out in the shaded sections.
- Tell someone your plan if you're heading out on your own, and don't push it on a sketchy road in the rain.
The bigger waterfalls are their own trips
You'll see Costa Rica's famous falls online (Río Celeste's turquoise water, La Fortuna near Arenal). Those are real and spectacular, but they're 4 to 5 hours away and deserve their own multi-day stop, not a Sámara day trip. The cleanest way to see them is to bookend your beach week with a couple of nights near Arenal on the way in or out. Your next hotel will know its backyard better than we do.
Pair it with a jungle morning
A waterfall day pairs naturally with a wildlife walk or a guided ATV ride through the hills, where the jungle scenery is the whole point. Go in the morning, be back at the pool before the afternoon rain. For the seasonal logic, see our green-season guide.
