"But doesn't it rain?" is the question we get most about the green season. Here's the honest answer: yes, and it usually matters less than people think. From May to November the pattern most days is a sunny morning, clouds building after lunch, then an afternoon or evening downpour that clears by dinner. You plan around it, you don't fight it. And on the rare all-day soaker, the town still works. Here's the wet-afternoon playbook.
Let the morning carry the day
The single best move in green season is simple: do your outdoor stuff before noon. Beach, surf, boat, market, all of it lands better in the clear morning anyway, fewer people and softer light. When it's actually pouring
- Lean into the villa. This is what a private pool and a covered terrace are for. Rain on the roof, swim anyway (warm rain on warm water is a genuinely great feeling), board games, a movie on the 50" TV, a long lunch you cooked together.
- Cook the feria haul. A rainy afternoon is when the blender earns its keep. Make frescos, try a fruit nobody recognizes. See our frescos guide and fruit seasons guide.
- Book an in-villa experience. A massage at the villa or a private chef dinner turns a gray day into the nicest day of the trip. Both need 24 to 72 hours' notice; just ask.

Rain-friendly activities that still run
Surf lessons often run in light rain (you're getting wet anyway, and the wind can be better). Yoga, Spanish lessons, and indoor classes don't care about the weather at all. A spotting-scope wildlife walk can be excellent in a drizzle; the forest comes alive. Boat trips are the main thing weather actually cancels, so keep those flexible.
What to skip in heavy rain
Don't drive the dirt roads to Barrigona or the Nosara stretch on a heavy-rain day; they get sloppy and the rivers come up. And never enter a waterfall pool during or right after a downpour. Flash floods are real and fast. More on that in our waterfalls guide.
