Isla Chora is the small white-sand island you can see from Sámara's beach, sitting inside the bay's marine reserve. Paddle or motor out, snorkel the shallow reef, and you've got the easiest water adventure in town: calm, close, and reliable for fish, with a decent shot at turtles or rays. Here's how to do it right.
Two ways out: kayak or boat
You can reach Chora by kayak (more intimate, a bit of a workout, best for couples and small families) or by boat (faster, drier, easier with little kids or grandparents). Both run as roughly 3-hour, low-tide departures, since the tide sets the timing more than the clock does. Mornings are usually calmest.

You've got a handful of good operators in town: a couple of owner-run single-boat outfits, a Costa Rican-owned company that also does the mangrove kayak, and a naturalist-led version with a spotting scope if you want the why behind what you're seeing. Bring reef-safe sunscreen (this one matters)
Use zinc-oxide reef-safe sunscreen, not the regular kind. It protects the coral, and some operators will turn you back at the boat if you show up with the wrong stuff. Buy it before you fly; selection in town is thin and pricier. Full list in our packing guide.
What you'll actually see
Tropical fish in good numbers over the reef, often green sea turtles, sometimes rays, and the occasional small reef shark (harmless, and a highlight if you spot one). It's not a world-famous reef, and we won't pretend it is. It's a gentle, reliable, kid-friendly snorkel in warm water 15 minutes from your door, which is exactly what most families want.
Make it a half-day, not a whole one
